Unwanted Guest - review
I'm lucky, I get to read books before most people know they exist, I'm even luckier in that I then spend time with the author selling them.
Last year we worked with Shari Lapena and she was lovely, we all enjoyed her story and loved her debut, The Couple Next Door, It sold remarkably well, I think because it's stylishly and simply told and believable.
Shari is back and with a Wow!
We have an event on Mon 23rd July 1pm in Bolton Central Library, it's free... COME!
Or get in touch and send £10 by Paypal to me and I'll get a book signed and posted for free...
So, again, it's stylish and simply told, which is brilliant, because it means you just read and are blown away. Many detective books have all the protagonists on view and then throw in a curve ball and you are left saying, did I miss something, it's just how they do it... From Christie and her Ten Little Indians ever on...
Shari, will know all this, but she also knows the law and she is sharp as a pin. She takes us away fro an idyllic weekend in a luxury hotel, we know (all bar one poor guy) that there is no internet or cell/mobile cover... We want to go, we have reasons, the usual, but impeccably told, troubles, love, guilt, time to heal, pain, showing off.... all done in the right small doses. Secrets are hinted at and denouements are done...
It races along, things do go badly, you are left staring at everyone and not trusting them, scared to leave the room and yet feeling it could be you, either dead next or the one suddenly exposed as the killer...
With a brilliant multi narrator style which works ever so well, Shari manages to make us have fear and feeling from all sides and never to my knowledge does she slip in her grip over us believing everyone and everything...
As a non drinker, I wonder if I'd have hit the drinks tray! The subtle way she ramps up the terror with clever time passing is brilliant, we already know time is running out, for differing reasons.
I genuinely defy anyone to guess and be right, the payoff is magnificent, the sheer depth of character Shari creates is flawless, these people are real, we are there with them, we feel it and see it and the tiredness and bewilderment frazzle us, reading it in one go is definitely the best way and it's perfect for that...
I truly try and not put spoilers in and not name many characters, I simply want to imbue a feel for why to read and be trusted...
I've read loads of books, there is a lot of good stuff out there, some more good than others... Shari deserves to be up there and I am sure you'll all agree...
It'd be lovely to meet some of you at an event or see orders...
