Aberrations Book One - Review
I am extremely lucky, I have known Joseph since day one.
He came to Formby as a brand new author who was local to us and had written 'The Spook's Apprentice'
it was a stunning small hardback in mock black leather, just to die for.
We became friends and have sold over 10,000 copies in 12 years...
I also get to read his books ahead of the rest of almost the world...
I am a fan, not just because I know him, but because I really think he is the absolute master of scares and chills for anyone with a pulse.
Aberrations is his first new work for quite a while as he had 3 spin-offs for Spook's and Arena 13 also was a trilogy.
So, this is exciting... and is amazing...
He takes us deep within his own past, to the very place he was born and envelops us in fear and mystery. The Shole is not a good thing and it is ever nearer, no-one knows what it is or why it is there. But, it is very near and very dangerous.
Set in his own favoured world of The County, but this time it's REAL... Preston and Lancaster and Penwortham are the actual real places and named accordingly.
We meet the Gate Grubs, Lucky, Donna and Crafty. They work for the Mancers and it is not easy to stay alive, you have to be a Fey and very brave.
The whole world Joseph has created so effectively is just so visual and so deathly.
The team man gates, each has a silver doorway and a specially fitted device to hopefully stop anything that tries to come from the Shole to the Daylight World. Just don't be slow...
Things are changed in the Shole and they are lethal and seem to want to come back. Crafty or Colin as his mum called him, first has to try out against his old family pet, Sandy and it is not nice...
We soon meet Bertha the Bog Queen and the Duke and Viper, he's ahem, not nice.
Then we have Lick and Miss Crompton-Smyth and developments...
The pace is break neck and the action visceral and brutal. It is VERY scary and yet utterly compelling and scarily believable...
Packed with local folklore of the Setantii and others. Set so you can walk the locations if you dare.
It seriously is superb and I cannot wait for more, a sequel is well on the way and almost certainly a third one.
